How I Cheated Divorce

Two days ago marked 20 years of marriage.
Marriage is tough, and raising kids is even tougher.
Add in multiple moves for my husband Rich’s career, and
there were times I felt completely lost.
A decade ago in Houston, I hit a breaking point.
I was unhappy in my career and started blaming Rich for moving us there.
But the truth?
I didn’t know what I wanted, and
I wanted Rich to tell me what to do.
Instead, he looked at me and said:
“Go figure it out.”
At the time, it felt harsh - this wasn't said in a casual conversation.
But now I see it was the best gift he could’ve given me
—space and trust.
It forced me to dig deep, to rediscover who I was beyond being a wife, mom, or even a former hedge fund portfolio manager.
That journey, as difficult as it was, turned out to be the most rewarding chapter of my life.
In hindsight, it brought us closer together.
For anyone navigating midlife transitions—whether it’s a career shift, an empty nest, or even a separation—the lesson I carry is this:
No one can tell you what you should want from your life.
That’s for you to decide.
If you’re thinking about your own “second half” and
how to align your money with your purpose,
