Key to a Happy Family

On Sat., Feb. 8th, 2014, I gave up my weekend morning to attend a parent education seminar at my daughter’s school — which, honestly, was the last thing I wanted to do with my time.
But I went because I was desperately searching for what was missing in my life.
The topic was “organizational health” — not for companies, but for families.
Married with three kids, living in Houston, my husband’s career was taking off, but I felt stuck. I didn’t believe in therapy, coaching wasn’t really a thing yet, and I’d always told myself I could figure things out on my own.
But this time I couldn't ....
The worst part was that no one seemed to understand the uneasy feeling I was having — that quiet sense of being lost even when everything looked fine on paper.
So I did what some moms do: I poured myself into my kids. I focused on turning Caroline into a young Mozart, picturing us traveling the world together for her violin concertos.
As much as our family loves classical music, I was trying to orchestrate something deeper — a sense of purpose I couldn’t quite find for myself.
Then the speaker said something that stopped me cold:
“Every family should have a mission statement — just like a company.”
Really? A family mission statement? That sounded like more work.
Still, I listened. I went through the exercises. I even kept the slides, which I still look back at every few years. I never actually wrote a family mission statement, but in hindsight, I learned something even more important.
It took me years to realize that finding happiness wasn’t about creating the perfect family—it was about creating a life that felt meaningful to me.
That journey has been a long one, but the hard work has finally paid off. While a family mission statement is a great place to start...
A happy family starts with a happy mom.
If you are interested im receiving the slides, please reach out! Happy to forward!!
