Turning an obstacle into an advantage

Growing up in a crappy apartment in Beverly Hills, surrounded by rich girls, I was at a disadvantage.

I had no connections or resources,

no safety net.

There was nowhere to return if I didn’t get a job immediately after college graduation.

It didn’t even make me sad that my mom was living in an RV up in Canada.

How was this constraint a good thing?

“Dependent people need others to get what they want. Independent people can get what they want through their own effort. ....” From The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

Failure wasn’t an option.  There was no Plan B.

I had to make it, otherwise I would end up like my mom

- living in an RV.

My determination came from when a mother loves you but you grow up fiercely independent and full of optimism.

This early dispositional optimism is defined as a generalized tendency to expect good outcomes across important life domains from the book Mind Magic, The Neuroscience of Manifestation and How it Changes Everything by James R. Doty, MD.

I had a feeling that everything would turn out ok for me.

This little magic I had inside of me.

"I Think I Can, I Think I Can" from The Little Engine That Could- is the magic.

We all need to:

  • believe in ourselves,

  • be optimistic about our futures, and

  • appreciate our independence

These are powerful drivers of success.

If you feel stuck, maybe you just need to believe more in your plan.

Reach out if you need help.

Thank you for reading!

Happy New Year!
