Life of a Showgirl

The world is constantly giving you feedback.
Most of us just don’t slow down long enough to listen.
A few weeks ago in Nashville, I put my whole life on hold for Caroline’s audition. And the experience taught me more about lanes, identity, and money than I expected.
The Moment Everything Got Quiet
The producers kept asking her:
“Are you country?
Are you pop?
What’s your style?”
Caroline said the truth — she likes to sing everything and she appreciates all kinds of music.
But when she performed a cover song, she didn’t feel it. The song wasn’t her song.
I wanted her to succeed, of course.
But down deep inside I didn’t want to become a stage mom trying to mold her into someone else’s story — the life of a showgirl, performing on command.
The producers weren’t wrong. Their job is to find the stories that grab attention — the ones that feel original and unmistakably you.
The Feedback I Didn’t Want to Hear
It hit me later:
This is the same feedback I’m getting about my book proposal.
“Come back when you’ve gone viral.”
Translation: Find your own distinct voice.
It stings. But it’s also fair.
Just like Caroline, I’m still uncovering my lane — how to write a book that inspires young women to focus on making money as a creative act, not a chore. Because making money is really about showing the world your uniqueness and letting people pay you for it.
And it also reminded me of Robert Kiyosaki’s book, Rich Dad Poor Dad.
Every publisher rejected him. He self-published anyway. And that book became the #1 personal finance book of all time.
He dedicated it “to parents everywhere… those who educate, influence, and lead by example.”
That line stayed with me.
Because sometimes the world doesn’t put you on the stage you want —
but it always gives you the feedback you need - it’s up to me to educate, influence and lead by example. (Photo is called B roll by #americanidol ;)
Everyone has a story, sometimes it helps to share it with others!
Thank you for reading!
