Lucky Girl

Investing in metals and mining companies made me and our investors a lot of money 15-20 years ago.

I was a portfolio manager in New York.

I was in the right seat at the right time.

I was a lucky girl.

But then everything changed seven years ago.

I was running around on a track in Houston in the heat, suffering.

I had no direction.

I wanted the recognition and status I used to enjoy.

But my old identity was no longer relevant.

Why didn’t anyone tell us midlife was going to be so hard?

I had to follow a different sector, a different path.

I had to get off this rat race.

I didn’t know which direction to take until I listened to the book,

The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday running in heat at Houston.

(The photo is of my son being goofy in 100-degree heat at Kinkaid School)

Turn every obstacle into an advantage.

My biggest obstacle....

I am a woman who works in finance in a very male-dominated world.

Recently I discovered Tom Morgan of Sapient Capital.

To quote Tom “Contrary to a lot of self-help and spiritual literature, I’m not sure that we can travel from “corporate value” to “personal value” either quickly or easily. This is because in order to get paid to be yourself, you first need to know what your unique gifts are and then match them to what the world needs. This process often requires an intense suffering you wouldn’t voluntarily buy, even if you could find a guru crazy enough to sell it to you.

It was painful to read 6 500-page books on Trusts and Estates, Insurance, Taxes, Financial Planning, and Investment management for 8 hours a day for 4 months straight so I could earn my Certified Financial Planning credential.

Even after I passed the CFP exam in March 2017, it was still another 4 years of ups and downs on my journey.

The key message Tom emphasizes is that the leap can be worth it, and the suffering often has a deeper purpose.

When people remember the past, they don’t only talk about happiness. It is often the ordeals that seem most significant. People shoot for happiness but feel formed through suffering. -David Brooks

It's been a long 7 years but now I am really the lucky girl.

As someone who has goes through so many ups and downs, I've created a new type of purpose - to inspire you to take action, go through the hero’s journey, and to serve you as an advisor, an investor and even a blogger in the best way possible.
