Animal Spirits

Growing up in Beverly Hills, surrounded by rich girls, taught me two of the most important lessons in life.

My single mother was doing the best she could.

We lived in a sh*tty apt so I could attend Beverly Hills High School.

She lived a comfortable life even though she drove a beat-up old Porsche.

But I was surrounded by kids with so much

- expensive clothes, fancy cars, 24/7 housekeepers.

What was it then that drove me?

- I had zero pressure from my parents to do well.

- I didn’t set out to be anything in life, I just wanted to survive.

So what really drove me?

Animal Spirits and Invisible Hand

Animal Spirits is an economic concept that describes the psychological and emotional factors that drive investors to take action when faced with high levels of volatility in the capital markets.

For me?

There was no safety net.

There was no going back home.

I had innate spirit to take action.

The 2nd economic concept - the Invisible Hand is a metaphor for how, in a free market economy, self-interested individuals operate through a system of mutual interdependence.

This interdependence incentivizes producers to make what is socially necessary, even though they may care only about their own well-being.

If I didn’t figure out how to make money,

I was going to get crushed.

I acted out of self-interest for my own well-being.

Something I experienced as a kid,

drove me to want to make money and

to continue to develop my career.

I do think the ingredients to a good life is discovering what drives you.

Everyone has had a childhood experience that taught them something about themselves. That something is how we interpret the world around us and how we want to fit in.

For me, I wanted to be a rich girl.

So I went to work on Wall Street where the ones who do best are the most hungry.

It's hard to reflect but when you do, you find the gifts that life gives you.
