After a terrible night’s sleep, worrying about everything possible: kids, money, the stock market, I woke up at 4:30 am and drove from Houston to Dallas.
It was May 2017.
I was headed north to attend an Invest in Women conference by FA magazine.
How do you invest in women?
Confused and curious, I was excited to find out.
At the time, I was utterly lost in my career and life.
- I didn’t know which direction to take.
- I wasn’t sure if I should stay in financial services.
- I felt alone and had no one to talk to.
The conference was packed with female financial advisors.
- The women dressed well.
- There was a sense of sophistication, experience, and authority.
Most of the women were CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERs ™
- I was jealous,
- I felt frustrated,
- I was envious of these women, but I also wanted to be like them.
What these women had is what I didn’t have seven years ago…
Confidence about their future.
At that time, I was missing a plan, a destination.
I also needed a female advisor.
Women have so many ups and downs in life.
It feels like Everyday is A Winding Road - a great song by Sheryl Crow
And some of us need:
- To talk to others who have been on the same journey, to whom we can relate.
- Support as we make these tough decisions about our careers and our lives.
- Financial clarity.
Showing up at Investing in Women conference helped me make a big career pivot 7 years ago.
Here I am back at FA magazine's conference here in Atlanta with Tracey Longo (in photo), Padideh Trojanow (Raphael).
The lessons learned this year will help me support better and help women feel they have better opportunities to thrive and succeed.
