What Our Kids Can Teach Us

Driving Caroline to the airport on Saturday morning,
I confessed, I sometimes sound/look like my mom or
I know I try to control Caroline the way my dad used to try to control me
— a family trait I'm trying to let go.
She listened closely.
I reminded her that, whether we like it or not, we inevitably become our parents in some ways. And I'm trying hard to be self-aware and notice the pattern.
What was cool was that she was actually listening instead of tuning me out.
Meanwhile, Henry was resisting working on his essays over the long weekend.
Writing is hard, and the questions were even harder.
But in his quiet rebellion, he taught me something too: motivation often comes from having something to look forward to. We focus better when we can see a reward at the end of the process. So, I made him a deal — if he finished his draft, I’d buy him a new GPU.
He wrote three great drafts, and I was really proud of him.
Sometimes I find it hard to focus because I can’t see the “why” behind my own goals.
It hit me: many of my goals have lost their meaning because I’ve been chasing outcomes instead of purpose. Maybe the real lesson — the one my kids keep teaching me — is that we all need a reason that matters.
